About me

Do I like Polaroid cameras? I would say yes.

My name is Michaël Flocco and I’m a French photography enthusiast.

I remember when I was a child, I used to take pictures with disposable cameras without understanding all the magic happening inside.

When digital photography started to revolutionize the media, I began looking into it with compact cameras and bridges. Then in November 2011, I bought my first SLR: a Canon EOS 600D. I tried to shoot all-manual to learn as much as I could as fast as possible so my beginnings were difficult but I was impressed with the quality of the photos so I kept learning and shooting.

One day in Edinburg (Scotland) where I was working, I went to a car boot sale and stumbled upon a Polaroid model 1000 for sale at £5. I knew next to nothing about instant photography but I thought the camera looked cool so I bought it and started looking into buying film from The Impossible Project. The film was very expensive so I scarcely used the model 1000 and rather kept improving my digital gear, making the leap to full-frame with a Canon EOS 6D.

Then a few years later, I was packing my camera gear for my 2-months trip to Japan and for some reason I brought the model 1000 with me and two packs of film. Little did I know, this would be the beginning of my passion for instant photography. After a few weeks in Japan I saw a Polaroid SX-70 (a foldable SLR with an amazing design) in a camera store and bought it. It immediately improved the experience of instant photography tenfold!

I started buying packs of film more often and getting the hang of it all until one day I had the opportunity to make an exhibition at the local university library and I chose instant photography as my main theme. By then I already owned several Polaroid cameras but I wanted to show more cameras alongside my photos in the exhibition so I bought a lot of different models online, which was the beginning of my collection.

Now I own some of the best instant cameras available and enjoy this media even more than digital photography. There’s some kind of magic behind Polaroid cameras, obtaining the printed photo in a matter of minutes and discovering it and its surprises really is a peculiar and rewarding experience.
